New Year
I was sick to death of feeling awful
So I decided to do something about it.
I poured out the booze
And ate a lot of vegetables.
I went out into the yard and did yard work
Until sweat ran off my shoulders in rivers.
I took a cool bath and cleaned the house
And cooked dinner for myself
And the rest of the neighborhood.
Later I rounded up all the stray dogs
I could find, the meaner the better,
For the last and best test.
In the morning when they were hungriest
I set them loose upon myself.
We all took off running but
I tripped and they ran on ahead
To whatever grand adventures await them.
